The idea for this website first came about when some friends and I were taking a drive up to Square Town on a Thursday night to visit the Skvere Rebbe. My friend was a week away from proposing to the girl he wants to spend his life with and we were going up to get some Brachos (Blessings) and well wishing from this holy man.
On our way, I felt as I did back in Yeshiva. Thursday night traditionally, has been a night where young men in yeshiva stay up late studying. To reward ourselves, we used to go to the local deli’s and get a nice hot bowl of cholent (which is a traditional European dish eaten every shabbos).
In this moment heading to this very Chassidic neighborhood, I reminisced and suddenly had an urge to stop somewhere for a bowl of this wonderful stew.
However, we did not know the area, nor did we know whom to ask. I started making calls to everyone who I thought might know where to stop for cholent in the area. I finally got ahold of a friend who told me that about 20 minutes from where we were, there was a gas station (!!!!) that had cholent every Thursday night.
As you can imagine, I was in a state of shock and disbelief. Whoever heard of a gas station that sells cholent?
Being that it was already late, and we were all craving some cholent now we decided that we would take the chance and head to this supposedly famous cholent spot.
Upon our arrival, I could not believe my eyes. In the gas station, right between the coffee machine and the fridge, there was a pot of cholent brewing. Not only that, people were filling up their bowls like it was going out of style.
We immediately joined the crowd and finished the pot. No worries though, as the owner stepped out with a fresh new batch and put that on the fire for those who would be coming for their weekly visit even later than we did. (mind you, it was already 1 am).
I must admit, it was one of the best cholent’s I have ever tasted.
( I return to this gas station as often as I get a chance to chat with the owner and get some of his now famous Thursday night cholent.)
The following morning I joked around with some friends saying that if only there was a website that listed all the cholent spots in the world; we would never be in this situation again. With that thought on my mind, I decided to start cholentsearch.com.
We have done plenty of research but of course there’s always that hidden gem of a cholent somewhere that only few people know about. I invite you to share with us, any locations you may know of, that are not listed here. You will be doing so many of us the favor of finding that special cholent.
I now present to you cholentsearch.com for cholent listings, anywhere, anytime, anyplace, and any taste!!!!
